Four Door Lexus
May 8 – June 5, 2021
Aspect/Ratio Projects is pleased to present Four Door Lexus, a show with David Leggett.
Aspect/Ratio Projects is pleased to present Four Door Lexus, a new body of work from artist David Leggett. His paintings and drawings are often elaborate collages that meld icons of black power together with symbols of white racism into a political commentary of American culture, and this exhibition is no exception. Leggett is adept at assembling a visual language to create his brand of ironic humor, evident throughout his practice. Combining fragments of text, black faces, eyes, images of small-town Americana, and black culture, Leggett explores these ideas through the use of color field painting and abstraction. This allows him to move the figures and images around, creating multiple entry points and moods that confront the viewer. Black Bart again returns, representing fad culture and how it can get wrapped up with activism, often falling out of fashion when the next trend comes along. Identity and individuality are issues Leggett continues to explore in this body of work; few artist’s work feels more timely and immediate at this moment.
