Aspect/Ratio Projects is pleased to present The Problem of Freedom, a new body of work from Cuban artist Alejandro Figueredo Díaz-Perera. Inspired by a 1939 Rutgers convocation speech by Thomas Mann, Díaz-Perera began using the speech as a creative tool, testing the boundaries and limits of words displayed on a page, language, and space as defined by Díaz-Perera’s hand and simple black ink. Drawing daily on a used book of Mann’s speech, the resulting image demonstrates a visual ambiguity – is it a beautiful drawing of a starry night, or simply a censored book? In Díaz-Perera’s own words, “The limits of my world are the limits of my language. The limits of my language are the paradoxes of said language. In order to uncover the limits of my language I do things to things until they become a paradox of themselves.” Working in multiple mediums of video, drawings, and sculpture, Díaz-Perera examines heritage and our colonial past, mortality, and how simple tools are often used as a means of control, limitation, repression, but also organization and legality. Energy, both artificial and spiritual synthesize this exhibition, moving through the show one will no doubt be impacted by the energy Díaz-Perera has created with these works.
