Raheleh Filsoofi & Cameron Patricia Downey
December 10, 2021 – January 21, 2022
ENGAGE Projects is pleased to present Intersections, a show with Raheleh Filsoofi and Cameron Patricia Downey.
ENGAGE Projects is pleased to present Intersections, a two person exhibition featuring Raheleh Filsoofi and Cameron Patricia Downey. Both conceptual artists working in multiple mediums, Intersections brings Filsoofi and Downey together to examine and explore boundaries, convergence, and the histories that influence our experiences. Through video, photography, sound and sculpture, Filsoofi and Downey confront the viewer, asserting their own individual voices, while exposing the confluence of their practices. Intersections challenges us to reflect upon the impact our unique experiences assert on our collective circumstances through the examination of memory, histories, and location, thus informing how we interact and intersect with one another and our environments.
Raheleh Filsoofi is a collector of soil and sound, an itinerant artist, feminist curator, and community service advocate. Her work synthesizes socio-political statements as a point of departure and further challenges these fundamental arguments by incorporating ancient and contemporary media such as ceramics, poetry, ambient sound, and video. Filsoofi experiments with and utilizes different aesthetic strategies to address borders, immigration, land and ownership. She holds an M.F.A. in Fine Arts from Florida Atlantic University and a BFA in Ceramics from Al-Zahra University in Tehran, Iran. She is an Assistant Professor of Ceramics in the Department of Art at Vanderbilt University.
Her work has been shown individually and collaboratively both in Iran and the United States including the Spinello Project Gallery, Miami; Betty Foy Sanders Gallery at Georgia Southern University, Statesboro; Abad Art Gallery, Tehran; Strohl Art Center, Chautauqua; The Bo Bartlett Center, Columbus, and Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery, Nashville. She has been the recipient of grants and awards, including the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Cameron Patricia Downey is an anti-disciplinary artist, environmental scientist, and writer from Minneapolis, Minnesota. She explores concepts of world-building and liminal space by way of Black, fantastical and precarious bodies. Downey uses sculpture, film, photography, the written and the performed in her conceptual art practice. She explores the varied and dynamic implications of suspension as they exist within Black experience. Downey writes for MPLSART, a visual arts calendar serving Minneapolis and St. Paul that covers local artists, galleries, and exhibitions. A recent graduate from Columbia University, Downey has been interviewed for Ratrock Magazine and her work has been shown at Hair + Nails, South Minneapolis; Kunstraum Kreuzberg, Berlin and Rochester Art Center.
