Bryan Zanisnik: The Passenger

09.05.2014 – 10.18.2014

Aspect/Ratio Projects is delighted to present The Passenger, new work from gallery artist Bryan Zanisnik.

The Passenger continues Zanisnik’s examination of suburbia, family and related failures and catastrophes. The video, Aquarium Painting, commissioned jointly by The Institute of Contemporary Art of Philadelphia and Recycled Artist in Residency, unfolds inside of Revolution Recovery, a construction, demolition and manufacturing waste recycling facility in Philadelphia. Working with discarded hospital cubicles and unwanted domestic materials, Zanisnik builds a fantastical set for the artist and his parents to perform within – including a cameo “dance” with industrial equipment by artist, Billy Dufala. The labyrinth of waste echoes homelands battered by natural disasters and speaks to Zanisnik’s exploration of Americana.

American masculinity is addressed further with new hand-stitched textiles referencing the East Coast novelist, Philip Roth. Included in The Passenger is a site-specific installation, which expands upon Zanisnik’s practice of building sets for his studio.

Bryan Zanisnik lives and works in New York City and will be included in the upcoming group exhibition, Crossing Brooklyn at The Brooklyn Museum opening in October, 2014. Most recent solo shows include: The Institute of Contemporary Art of Philadelphia, and Smack Mellon. Previous group exhibitions include: SculptureCenter, Dorsky Gallery, The Fabric Workshop, Queens Museum of Art, and The De La Cruz Collection. He has been a resident at The Smack Mellon Program, MacDowell Colony, and Skowhegan and has been reviewed extensively in The New York Times, Art in America, and Artforum. Currently, he is featured in New York Close Up on Art21.
