Morality Play
Chris Cosnowski
The soap paintings refer to the feeling of cleanliness that accompanies a clear conscience. The phrase “Cleanliness is next to godliness” comes to mind. All of the soaps are actual soaps that can be purchased. This is conceptually important to the work that these soaps actually exist in the world (I could easily make the names and achieve the same sense of realism) that someone or some company felt that this name of soap would be profitable. The names can so easily be related to ideas of morality. These paintings also focus more on purely formal concerns. Reminiscent of Giorgio Morandi and William Bailey
