Blue Space
Sharon Louden
Sharon Louden’s black paintings from her Hedge series consist of acrylic, gel medium and watercolor on panel. Prepared with many layers of gesso and paint, the ultra smooth surface creates a contrast to the elevated blue, yellow and white brushstrokes meant to be active and alive sitting on top of the pristine background. As Paddy Johnson wrote her in Time Out New York review of an exhibition of these Hedge paintings in New York City in November 2007, “Notwithstanding their precision and minimal approach, Louden’s paintings avoid feeling predetermined or stiff, managing to remain almost lighthearted and natural-looking despite their pristine surfaces.”
