Blue Space
Rob Fischer
Bounce (2016), a quintessential piece from Fischer’s wall-mounted works, flaunts a contrasting palette of blues and yellows, striking the viewer first with its delightfully contradictory colors and holding their attention with the depth of its layering. The painting captures a sense of fragmented light, perhaps even a scene of the hot sun and cloudless sky filtering through painted glass panels. Rectangular iterations of its composition recall the orderliness of colored glass windows from industrial warehouses while the painting’s subtle diagonals upset a perfect arrangement. This departure from order suggests the dilapidated state of abandoned, post-war warehouses, and hence, industrial America today, as work has transitioned away from the production of goods towards services.
