I Will Be Your Guide for This Session: Einat Amir
04.24.2015 - 05.30.2015
Aspect/Ratio Projects is pleased to present, I Will Be Your Guide for This Session, from gallery artist Einat Amir. This will be her first solo exhibition in Chicago and inaugural show at the gallery.
Einat Amir investigates contemporary socio-political issues through works that oscillate between video and performance. I Will Be Your Guide for This Session follows two groups of participants as they embark on a journey examining personal narratives through psychoanalytic and physical exercises. Through the direction of two professional guides, the boundaries between the performative and the authentic are challenged. The participants of these two groups were volunteers selected through an open call and asked to choose a vest emblazoned with a word, such as “childhood”, “sex” or “happiness” amongst others, that provided an additional emotional trigger during the session. The outcome of this experiment was unpredictable. The filmed sessions were not scripted or rehearsed, appropriating methods used by Reality TV into this layered and complex artwork. I Will Be Your Guide for This Session is part of a larger project, Our Best Intentions, which is both video installation and live performance and was previously shown at the performance biennial Performa13.
Tel Aviv based artist Einat Amir holds her MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University in 2009. She has exhibited internationally with most recent solo shows including Petach Tikva Museum of Art and Performa13 New York. Upcoming shows include Enough About You, which will be installed and performed at The Maxxi Museum in Rome. Additionally, Amir’s work has been shown at: PS1 Contemporary Art Center New York, PERFORMA09 New York, Palais De Tokyo Paris, The Kitchen New York, Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde, VOLTA Basel, VOLTA NY, Scaramouche Gallery New York, Winzavod Art Center, Moscow, Bergen Kunsthall Norway, Dallas Contemporary Art Center Texas, Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art Israel; Haifa Museum of Art Israel , Bat Yam Museum of Art Israel, Rosenfeld Gallery Tel Aviv, CareOf gallery Milan, Fondation d’entreprise Ricard Paris MLAC Rome, Lilith Performance Studio Malmö, Städtische Galerie Bremen, and Digital Art Center Hulon.
