Derrick Woods-Morrow
Fever Dream
This photograph evolved from an important body of work centered around a single figure, Adam. Given an assignment to represent the Cop in the Village People, Woods-Morrow drew on highly traumatic personal experiences creating a series of work exploring isolation, fear, intimacy and depersonalization. After many years, Woods-Morrow reconnected with Adam, a childhood friend who became a cop. Woods-Morrow wanted to explore if Adam was the same person as he was as a child, what is the relationship of whiteness to blackness? During their multi-day interaction, Woods-Morrow photographed Adam in various positions, states of undress, and locations at the precinct. Intentionally, Adam appears in a shower/bathtub like a child, contrasting the perceived power of the uniform with the safest place for a child. This work was created specifically for "Fever Dream". It is a diptych that has become one work by superimposing two photographs. Wood-Morrow is physically putting Adam back into the shower where his face has been removed by the flash of his camera.
When you were eight
And you had bad traits
You go to school
And learn the golden rule
So why are you
Acting like a bloody fool
If you get hot
You must get cool…
