In the painting there is a collage cutout of Derrion Albert's sister. Derrion was killed in 2009 in Chicago. The video went viral worldwide. It is the beginning of Chicago becoming a lightning rod by both the left and right.
On the front page of the Red Eye in Chicago was a photo of Derrion's sister crying after hearing of his death. It was both a beautiful photo and devastating at the same time. The painting also includes a figure that appears in other paintings. I wanted the figure to be ambiguous. It's not important their gender or age. It's only important they are there. Are they sad, happy, or in their feelings? That is up to the viewer to decide.
