Aspect/Ratio Projects is pleased to present, The Breath We Took, an exhibition of new work by Chelsea Knight.
With The Breath We Took, Chelsea Knight continues her exploration of combining documentary, biography and fiction to examine contemporary society. Knight focuses her lens on the ways motherhood becomes a constructed performance that follows societal norms and practices. The video is a collaboration between Knight, her family and numerous brides. The participants address issues of marriage, femininity, child-bearing and child-rearing. Knight weaves candid interviews, monologues and fictional accounts into a story about love, vulnerability and being a woman.
Chelsea Knight lives and works in New York. She studied at Oberlin College before going on to receive an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Knight has had residencies at the Whitney Independent Study Program and at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Her solo exhibitions include: The St. Louis Art Museum; Abrons Art Center, New York; and Momenta Art, Brooklyn. Knight’s work has been included in group shows at Art In General, NY; the Kitchen, NY; the Young Artists’ Biennial, Bucharest; the 10th Annual Istanbul Biennial. In 2011-2012, she was a fellow at the Sam Fox Graduate School of Art, Washington University in St. Louis. Upcoming projects include a group exhibition Nouvelles Vagues at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris opening in June, 2013.
