Aspect/Ratio Projects is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Casilda Sánchez.
Sánchez works with video, sculpture and drawing to explore ideas of looking. The sixth part of a series entitled, Quisiera ser tan alta como la luna (VI) (I wish I was as tall as the moon), is a sculpture linking an outstretched arm to a fully extended leg. Inspired by classical Roman and Greek figures, the sculpture is a continuation of Sánchez’s interest in de-contextualizing parts of the human body. The reimagined physique, one that reflects the driving wish to touch the moon, accentuates the animalistic side of the human body.
Winter Landscape is inspired by Flemish and Dutch Renaissance paintings of people enjoying the winter landscape. Shot in Prospect Park, the video triptych is of a blurry winterland. The blur makes the scenery into a timeless tableau of pleasure and activity. The video continues Sánchez’s interest in making slow moving photographs that record the pulse of being.
Casilda Sánchez lives and works in New York. She received an MFA in Video, Film and New Media from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and doctorate studies in Contemporary Art from Com- plutense in Madrid. Her work has shown at the Videonale 13 at the Kunstmuseum in Bonn, Germany and at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. She was included in the 8 Biennal d’art Leandre Cristòfol at La Panera Art Center in Spain and she is slated to have a solo show at La Panera Art Center in 2014.
