Blue Space
Andrew Bearnot
Sky Icon (Loading) is composed of 9 cylindrical glass objects laying on their sides, arranged in a radiating circular pattern. This arrangement references both the cyanometer (an 18th century instrument for measuring blueness of the sky) and the Apple spinning wheel loading icon. The glass contains an incrementally shifting intensity of blue: from palest aquamarine to deepest cobalt. When seen from above, the azure tones appear to saturate the glass volumes. However, closer observation through the satin-finished faces reveals a thin veil of color suspended within the volume. Each core contains a diffuse portal of tone and shade. Shifting based on the viewer’s orientation toward the work, the sky-like hues invite the viewer to calibrate themselves and to be calibrated by the sculpture – A meditation on simulation and the sublime.
