always repeating is all of living: Sabina Ott
Saturday, April 16 – Saturday, May 28, 2016
Aspect/Ratio Projects is pleased to present always repeating is all of living, a solo exhibition of new work from gallery artist Sabina Ott.

always repeating is all of living exploits intuitive human desire and aggravates temptation. Sabina’s exhibition features a grotto that makes reference to Plato’s Allegory of a Cave and directly parallels Sabina’s transformation of the interiors of this architecture; this synthetic environment constructed from recycled foam is reminiscent of her mountainous installation currently on display at Hyde Park Art Center entitled who cares for the sky?

Sabina challenges physical extremes through the diversity and ironic use of her mediums. The altered conditions of the gallery space is a playful gateway to a world evocative of both a brutalist painting and an abstraction of minimalist sculpture. Ott is captivated by the allegorical vantage of Gertrude Stein; Ott’s work restructures the adamant, the sublimation of the cathartic perversion of allegory, the novelty of obstinateness, and the ephemerality of foundational ordinances.

Sabina Ott has shown internationally beginning with an inaugural solo exhibition at The Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art in 1983. A 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship Grantee, Sabina Ott is an established multidisciplinary Chicago based artist. Her work is in numerous collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), The Whitney Museum of American Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her work incorporates installation-based themes into wall and floor based works filled with allegorical and baroque leanings. These works, made with lightweight yet impactful materials, such as polystyrene and spray foam, creates a spatial environment onto the two dimensional plane of the work. Recent solo show at The Chicago Cultural Center garnered favorable reviews in Artforum, Art in America and Hyperallergic.
