Who Marries the Wind?

Margaret Welsh
Referencing a quality uncapturable—perhaps the mystique of creativity—as well as a nod to women’s rights and freedoms, Who Marries the Wind? draws on bold verticals and castaway domestic materials to put forth an anti-heroic narrative. Common materials remain unmasked in Welsh’s paintings as she leans into the natural brown of the paper drop cloths to ground her palette, finding her compositions with its wrinkles. Gentle yet unwavering, Welsh’s paintings emit a rhetoric of feminist abstraction that pushes up against the historical traditions of painting.
