Edra Soto
Often describing the cultural dissonance between the U.S. and Puerto Rico with her work, Edra Soto intermingles the aesthetic language of her birthplace with U.S. visual culture. Meaning “Two Bodies,” this mixed media painting is part of a series of pieces that investigates the reja as a symbol of her home; rejas, translating to grids or iron screens, are the wrought iron gates ubiquitous in post-war Puerto Rico. Soto transplants this aesthetic staple to communicate nostalgia and a sense of belonging wherever she goes.
